VHX Wants To Be Your Video Dashboard For The Entire Internet

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Launching in private beta today and founded by original Vimeo developer Casey Pugh and Know Your Meme co-founder Jamie Wilkinson is VHX.tv, a site that aims to “combine the best parts of the TV experience with the best of the web.” But wait, haven’t we heard this like a bajillion times?

Right away there’s something different about VHX as a video-sharing experience, namely that when you hit the service after initially registering and following other users, the videos in your VHX dashboard start playing right away, almost like you’ve turned on the social video TV.

The site, which runs in flash, is admittedly quite slow to load, but once it does the experience of watching videos in your dashboard stream (what your friends have decided to share), in your queue (what you have flagged to watch later) or in your history is pretty much the closest I’ve come to non-fragmented experience on the web. This is great if you want to watch online video while folding clothes or cooking or doing exercise, and don’t want to have to click around aimlessly for the next thing distraction.

VHX also lets you download a bookmarklet that lets you share or queue up videos from around the web, and the VHX browser extension tracks what videos you’ve watched on other sites, adding them to your history. You can share directly to Twitter, Facebook, Gmail and Tumblr from within the app, linking to the original video. And while VHX currently only supports Vimeo and YouTube, Wilkinson tells me he wants to add other formats soon, essentially becoming a video dashboard for the entire web.

Working on in the online video space is a hard row to hoe, especially when you stand in the shadows of YouTube, Vimeo and Boxee, and audience success is not necessarily matched by a viable business model. “Online video consumption is not a simple problem to solve. Everyone distributes video differently and we’re here to smooth out these inconsistencies for the end-user.  We’ve been working in online video for years, have great relationships with all the players,” Wilkinson acknowleged.

VHX is working on more-in depth features that would turn the service into “your own personal Internet TV Station” where users would be able to create video playlists to share on VHX or embed on their own blogs. Wilkinson eventually wants to give user the ability to edit the videos themselves. The team also has native iPhone and iPad apps in development, as well as a Boxee app for those not content with watching videos on a computer screen.

The first hundred TechCrunch readers can get early access to the VHX beta here.

Internet PC TV Viewing Software

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Friday, March 25, 2011

The goal of this article will be to discuss some of the many reasons that more and more viewers are actually starting to prefer internet pc tv viewing software to traditional programming services. There simply does not seem to be a satellite or cable service that can compete with some of these advantages. I will also be discussing a top quality satellite TV to PC software that I am using to watch more than 3,500 HD Channels worldwide for free.

Even somebody that has never previously heard of such computer programs should be able to understand what they do. They allow a computer user to access satellite based networks from the use of his or her personal computer. People that have laptops will be able to access satellite television while on the go. It is also important to consider that the video and audio quality could rival the level of quality provided by a box and dish.

These type of computer programs are able to offer so many advantages because they are able to offer more stations from all around the world. Some people are surprised by how many channels they actually have access to. There are many traditional services that offer a few popular foreign stations, however none of them can compete with the foreign selection that is offered by the services being discussed here.

There are many advantages that are enjoyed by people that can easily access satellite stations from all around the world. One of the most notable benefits is the chance to watch rare sporting events that cannot be viewed from any other source. This type of computer application gets a higher rate of use during the world soccer season because of this. People can now easily watch all of the games and not just some of them.

Viewers that easily have access to channels from all around the world have a chance to introduce their selves to another country's culture. There are many people that quickly discover that being exposed to a particular land's television program can immerse somebody in that land's culture.

A lot of traditional type of services will have certain requirements as far as equipment goes. A person will typically have to go through the trouble of buying a dish and also a little black box that hooks up to their television. As if the person hadn't already paid out enough, they have that often hefty monthly bill to worry about. This kind of program frees viewers from equipment and billing restraints.

It is hoped that every reader can now understand why so many television viewers have switched over to internet pc tv viewing software options. There are certain things offered in these programs that are not offered by any type of pay service that is around today. I personally use a satellite TV on PC software that allows me to watch more than 3,000 international television channels online.

Netflix apologizes for downtime

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Thursday, March 24, 2011

A few days ago, Netflix’s video streaming went down for a few hours, and while it wasn’t explained what caused the problem (technical issues was the vague response), the service was up and running again at night. However it seems that Netflix feels bad about the issue and sent out email apologies as well as a 3% credit towards users’ next billing statement for the Watch Instantly Unlimited plan. We’re not sure if everybody received the letter of apology, but you can always call up Netflix (1-866-923-0898) to complain if the service interruption affected you. Hit the break to read the full email they’ve been sending out:

Dear User,
Recently you may have had trouble instantly watching TV episodes or movies due to technical issues.
We are sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. If you attempted and were unable to instantly watch TV episodes or movies yesterday, click on this account specific link in the next 7 days to apply your 3% credit to your next billing statement for your Watch Instantly Unlimited plan. Credit can only be applied once.
Ready to start watching again? Check out our latest selection.
Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. If you need further assistance, please call us at 1-866-923-0898.

Yearly Leaf: “It’s A Coffee Table Book Meets A Moleskine For The Facebook Set!”

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Sunday, March 20, 2011

I swear I’m not just being a lazy blogger because it’s Saturday and it’s a beautiful, sunny day here in Belgium (okay, maybe a little). I mostly just dig the way Mark here explained his new project in a recent email to me. Here it is, in all its unedited glory (with added links):
Hi Robin
My name is Mark Michael and I am the co-founder of YearlyLeaf.com.
Here is my story pitch…
Last year…I launched DevHub.com that turned building a website into a game, traveled to (Maui, Aruba, Puerto Vallarta, Panama), started a blog, spoke at two conferences, took up competitive sailing, went to Burning Man, got my brother on a reality TV show, went to 8 concerts, walked a charity 4 mile race, got featured on TechCrunch twice, Huffington Post once, got rejected by Kickstarter for this idea, went camping, bought a car, went wine tasting in Walla Walla, turned 28 and got engaged.
Till now most of these memories were posted in the form of status updates and pictures.
In the next couple weeks we will be launching Yearly Leaf (www.yearlyleaf.com). Yearly Leaf is a coffee table book meets a moleskine for the Facebook set!
Through the Yearly Leaf Facebook app you can turn posts, pictures, status updates and check-ins into a printed luxury bound book.
We are currently taking early sign ups.
Best regards,
Mark A. Michael

All the Web’s TV & Movies in One Sweet Spot: Moki.tv

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Saturday, March 19, 2011

If you’re a digitally aware couch potato like me, you risk burning a significant number of calories surfing between Hulu, Netflix, Amazon and iTunes to get your fix of movies and television shows.

If you’re interested in mitigating that risk, you’ll want to take a look at Moki.tv, an all-in-one guide to the Internet’s entertainment offerings.

From Moki, you can browse a broad and deep catalog of almost all the silver-screen and small-screen content available on the web. You can watch free content from Hulu; subscription stuff from Hulu Plus, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Comcast’s xfinity tv; and on-demand TV and movies from iTunes and Amazon Video On Demand. You can sign up with Facebook Connect, then simply select the content services you already use; Moki makes it easy to connect service with third-party authentication, so you won’t need to remember any logins.

Once you’re in, you’ll be able to rate movies and get recommendations — you can even pull your rating from Netflix to Moki and vice versa — and create a queue of shows and movies to watch. The site uses your ratings as well as ratings from IMDb, Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes to make recommendations for you; and the recommendations I got were spot-on, especially after I had imported my Netflix ratings.

Not only can you find and watch what you love without visiting a half-dozen websites; you can also find new shows and films to watch that are similar to ones you’ve already watched. You can sort content by genre, rating, popularity and release date; or you can browse award-winning films and TV shows. The site also has fascinating curated collections of content, like Shakespeare adaptations or Clint Eastwood flicks hand-picked by Eastwood himself.

In addition to getting boatloads of online video, you can explore trending lists of actors and directors, read synopses, write reviews, leave comments, and more. And perhaps best of all, if you signed up with Facebook Connect, you have an instant social connection and can see your friends’ ratings and reviews on content, too.

The site, though new, is remarkably full-featured; many of these cool features are made possible by clever integrations with existing sites and apps.

You can expect to see streaming media sources on Moki.tv soon. Currently, the site’s founders are polling users to find out which streaming sources are the most requested. Moki’s also working on an API.

We like the premise of the site — one-stop shopping for watching TV and movies online — and we like the UI, which is sleekly designed with lots of nice touches. Check it out for yourself, and let us know what you think.

Moki, Inc. is an San Francisco-based Y Combinator startup founded by Matt Huang, a recent MIT math grad, and Sandy Spicer, a fellow dev from MIT. The company is currently hiring looking for local engineering talent.

Fix for Apple TV screen flashing issue said that the way

One thing leads to another. First we have a series of screen flicker reports of people using an HDMI to DVI adapter with your Apple TV, and now an Apple representative confirmed on Apple's support forms that the company is indeed "aware of this problem and working on a solution. "No details for the moment, but it seems you can be sure that Apple will not go behind you because your TV does not have an HDMI port.

New Energy Star Standards Require 40 Percent More Efficient TVs, Cable and Satellite Boxes

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Thursday, March 10, 2011

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced an update of its Energy Star for TVs, and cable and satellite. According to a press release from the agency: From September 2011, these products must be 40 percent more efficient than conventional models in order to earn the ENERGY STAR. Energy Star expects to update the requirements of some other product of 20 this year.

TV manufacturers, cable and satellite boxes in the U.S. not have to comply with new Energy Star standards - unless they want their products are eligible for reimbursement, such as those highlighted by the availability GreenOhm.com regional government and a number of websites run by the states with reimbursement programs.

TV manufacturers have to label their games with information on the amount of energy consumed annually, and how it compares with a range of similar models, according to the Appliance Labeling Rule of the Federal Trade Commission into force on May 10, 2011.

According to research by In-Stat market (recently acquired by the NPD Group), sales of set-top box in North America slowed in 2010, and the trend is likely to continue this year. The NPD Group reported, however, that 2011 holiday sales of televisions, in particular:

"The segment of flat screen TV 46 to 47 inches was the fastest growth for the holiday, up 31 percent in units. Sales of televisions over 50 inches also recorded strong growth with a volume jump 21 percent driven by exciting new technologies such as 3D, Internet connectivity, and LED backlight. "

The FTC is still considering labeling requirements related to energy for personal computer manufacturers, cable or satellite set-top boxes, independent digital video recorders and personal computer monitors.
