Samsung Apps hits 100 million downloads milestone

Samsung has announced that its Apps market for mobile and TV applications has hit the 100 million downloads milestone in less than a year since its debut in June 2010. Samsung Apps launched alongside with the Wave smartphone that runs Samsung’s own bada operating system and now there are over 13,000 applications available in the Samsung Apps market. To celebrate the milestone, Samsung is having a contest with a weekly draw from March 25 to April 30, 2011. Anyone who downloads an app from Samsung Apps is entered to win a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, Galaxy Player, USB sticks, or vouchers for apps in the Samsung Apps store.

Tawkon Releases iPhone App On Cydia After Steve Jobs Closes Door With “No Interest” Response

We’ve written quite a few times about Tawkon – the Israeli mobile software company that had developed an interesting application for the iPhone that tells you the amount of radiation emitted by the iPhone.

We had first reported about the app almost a year back when it was rejected from the App Store and later when we heard that their application might be under reconsideration. Folks at Tawkon have just published a post announcing that Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs has closed the door on them.



Folks at Tawkon write:

We tried the front door via Apple’s App Store, including great discussions with senior Apple executives at their Cupertino headquarters who praised our app functionality and graphic appeal, and explored various technical solutions with us to overcome API restrictions and get tawkon onto the App Store.

But when Steve Jobs personally closed the front door with a curt 2-word email stating: “No Interest” (see original email below), we were left with no alternative but to climb through the Cydia window to let iPhone users see and lower their exposure to cellphone radiation.

The Tawkon iPhone app uses a variety of parameters like distance from cell phone tower, signal strength, weather condition, terrain, antenna proximity from the body, antenna orientation and travel speed to analyze the iPhone’s dynamic SAR (Specific Absorption Rate). It is to be noted that the iPhone app only “predicts” the emitted radiation and may not provide absolute measurements. However, it can be highly useful to users who may want to ensure if calls from a particular location is safe in terms of radiation levels. For instance, calls made from your basement may cause a higher level of radiation to be emitted compared to calls made from your living room and the iPhone app will thus help you in making a judgement on a safer place to make your calls from.

Tawkon had also carried out an experiment to find out how the death grip impacts the radiation level on smartphones like iPhone 4, BlackBerry 9700, and Nexus One.

Arctic Spas shows off hot tub-controlling iPhone app, waterproof ccase sold separately

Frankly, a few things in life are just too hard. Taxes being one of them, and moving from one’s spot in a hot tub to adjust the temperature and / or jet pressure being another. In a bid to solve issue number two, Arctic Spas has shoved out an iOS app (Android and BlackBerry are inbound) that interfaces with a WiFi module on some of the company’s hot tubs. Once loaded up, owners can control temperature and jets with a simple touch, though we hear that loads of steam and moist fingers aren’t exactly great for consumer electronics. Mobile App Users Are Both Fickle And Loyal: Study

A study published by the Massachusetts-based application Localytics analyst firm today confirms my suspicion that we both love - and quickly gets bored - our mobile applications. And, perhaps, that the studies are confirmed almost anything.

In Part 1 of their study, Localytics analyzed thousands of Android, iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Windows 7 uses the phone. Through its real-time application analysis service, they found that while most smartphone users are willing to try new applications (as evidenced by the 10 billion downloads from iTunes Store) 26 percent of the time to download an application, used once, never using it again.

With 400,000 iPhone / apps IPAD and 200,000 Android applications and the total number of users of smartphones grows to 61.5 million in the fourth quarter, appification our mobile experience continues to grow at a rapid pace. And therefore, it seems that many are pounding fellow MG Siegler TechCrunch described as the "wall of implementation."

On the other side of the coin, in Part 2 of the study was released today, Localytics found that 26 percent of application users are loyal, repeat customers, new applications use more than 10 times. Yes, the same percentage as the number of former smokers. And many loyal users and then switch to using the application of hundreds of times.

Although a high number of downloads I always feel very well to application developers, they can be misleading. If customers leave an application after a single use, high download numbers are actually part of a high turnover rate. the measurement of user participation, then it seems equally - if not more - important, especially as the number of mobile applications is growing exponentially.

Moreover, retention loyalty is precious, so encouraging users and users to reach back more than once has become (or should be) a top priority for developers. Many try to encourage repeat visits using the application purchases, subscriptions that offer new content, notices and updates. These methods are especially important considering how many developers make their money by shopping at the application and mobile advertising.

Therefore, it is 26 percent empty glass, or 26 percent complete? The good news is that it seems possible that so many loyal customers for application developers since they are the ones who are fickle. And here is for developers to find them, wherever they are.

RIM’s BBM Social Platform goes to open beta, lets devs bake BBM into BlackBerry apps

Announced in 2010, the BlackBerry Developer Conference last fall, BBM Social Platform has just become available for third party developers interested in beta. Of course, we may hope that opens up to other BlackBerry Messenger (read: non-BlackBerry) through API platforms ... but yes, that is not happening yet. In contrast, the SDK enables people developing for BlackBerry OS to integrate the capabilities of BBM in their own applications, and the capability list is extensive: you will be able to read and update user profiles, chats BBM integrated into your application, and transfer files, just to name some of the big (with permission, of course). The current beta version works for Java applications, while RIM is hard at work developing a new version for release in April will add WebWorks web application compatibility.

Download Winamp 1.0 for Android
