Untethered iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak released with PwnageTool and redsn0w for Windows & Mac

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Tuesday, April 05, 2011

Dev Team has finally announced the Untethered Jailbreak tool for iOS devices running 4.3.1 firmware. The iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak can be done using PwnageTool or redsn0w, available for all iOS devices running 4.3.1 except the iPad2. redsn0w is available both for Windows and Mac OS X, while PwnageTool is available for OS X only.

The 4.3.1 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.1 except for the iPad2:
  • iPhone3GS
  • iPhone4 (GSM)
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad1
  • AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only for now)
The reason the untether won’t work as-is on the iPad2 is that it requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the iPad2 is not susceptible to either the limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.

AT&T Admits to Intentionally Slowing Down Atrix and HTC Inspire

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Wednesday, March 30, 2011

If you're a T-Mobile subscriber locked into a multi-year contract, you have to hope that AT&T's latest shenanigans aren't a sign of things to come. Following a bunch of complaints made to the Better Business Bureau, AT&T admitted to intentionally crippling the Atrix and HTC Inspire, which explains why owners of these two smartphone models have been unable to see anything near 4G upload speeds, according to DSLReports.com. Left unexplained, however, is exactly why AT&T did this.

While AT&T is reluctant to explain themselves, the wireless carrier did promise to remedy the situation with an upcoming software update.

"We're excited to announce that both the Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G are expected to receive software updates in April," AT&T stated on its Facebook page. "In addition, one of AT&T's next leading Android devices, the Samsung Infuse 4G, will ship with HSUPA already enabled. With these software updates, and our continued rollout of expanded backhaul, our 4G devices will continue to get faster. Please keep in mind that software is only one of many factors that can affect speeds experienced. Factors such as location, time of day, network capacity, and facilities can have an impact as well."

So there you have it. If you own an Atrix or Inspire smartphone, hang tight and you should experience faster network performance come April.

Feel Daring? Nvidia GeForce 270.51 Beta Drivers Now Available for Download

0 comments Posted by ADMIN on Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Experimenting with beta drivers isn't for the faint of heart, especially when it comes to videocards. After all, this is your pricey GPU we're talking about, and a poorly coded driver can wreak all kinds of havoc, from instability to artifacting, to even overheating if the fan doesn't kick on when it's supposed to. That said, if you're down for playing with pre-release drivers, Nvidia has made available its GeForce 270.51 driver set in beta form.

The new 270.51 beta drivers add support for the recently released GeForce GTX 590, GTX 560 Ti, and GTX 550 Ti videocards. In addition, Nvidia says you can expect performance gains versus the 266.58 drivers when using GeForce 400 series and 500 series GPUs. Some of these are truly massive, such as up to 516 percent better performance in Dragon Age 2, though in a very specific situation (SLI, 2560x1600, 8xAA/16xAF, Very High, SSAO on).

Also new to the 270 series of drivers (and later), Nvidia Update will keep your PC up-to-date with the latest graphics card drivers by notifying you when a new driver is available.

Massachusetts Restaurant Chain Fined $110,000 for Data Breach

If you're a business owner living in Massachusetts, failing to keep your customers' personal information safe from virtual prying eyes isn't just bad for business, it's also illegal. This was underscored by a MA restaurant chain agreeing to pay a $110,000 fine to settle a complaint alleging that hackers were able to access customers' credit and debit card information. That's a big no-no in Massachusetts.

According to ThreatPost.com, Massachusetts is home to the nation's toughest data breach law. In agreeing to pay $110,000 to settle charges, the Briar Group LLC becomes the first company to be fined under the law. The case actually dates back to an April 2009 incident when a malicious program was installed on Briar's network. The program wasn't detected and removed until eight months later.

In addition to the heavy fine, the Briar Group also agreed to prove compliance with the state's data security regulations and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). Despite all this, there aren't any hard feelings on the part of the Briar Group. In a statement, the Briar Group said the settlement "achieves our shared goal of ensuring that our customers can use their credit cards with confidence in the security of their data."
